3./Jagdgeschwader 51. Mannheim – Sandhofen, Germany, Winter 1939 – 1940
The camouflage scheme shown on this aircraft was introduced at the end of 1939, during ‘Sitzkrieg’ (phoney war) and during the defence of Germany against the first retaliatory raids by the RAF.
The ‘Totenhand’ (dead hand) was the unit insignia of 3./JG 51. The ‘ Kitzbuheler Gams’ markings, were used by 1./JG 51, and was a reminder of the Austrian pilots who came into to the unit.
