Pilot Flight Lieutenant Arthur Victor ‘Darky’ Clowes
No. 1 Squadron, RAF Wittering, November 1940.
Arthur Victor Clowes, DFM, DFC, was born in New Sawley, Derbyshire on 16th August 1912. He joined the RAF in January 1929 as an Aircraft Apprentice. He later applied for pilot training and was accepted. At the outbreak of war he was serving with No.1 Squadron. During the Battle of France he scored a total of 8 kills, with 3 more being added during the Battle of Britain.
He then went on to command No.79 Squadron at Baginton, No.601 Squadron in the Western Desert and then No.94 Squadron at El Gamil. He died on 7th December 1949 from liver cancer and is buried in Brampton Cemetery, Huntingdonshire.
